History & Culture

A long and proud history of resistance has left remarkable signs in the culture of our territory, especially with timeless stories, legends, and songs. Further, remains of ancient settlements and vestiges of long-gone regimes represent a fascinating, but yet underestimated heritage.

“Poverty, brothers, is a mouthful that’s hard to swallow, / A bite that sticks in your throat and leaves you in sorrow, / When you watch the pale faces and rheumy eyes / Observing you like ghosts and holding out thin hands; / Behind you they lie, stretched out / Their whole lives through, until the moment of death.”

The Migjeni school-museum is one of the central points for Puka’s history, dedicated to the priceless contribution of the Albanian poet Millosh Gjergj Nikolla (in art Migjeni) to the development of educational institutions in Puka in 1936 and 1937. Migjeni is still one of the most famous poets of the so-called Albanian Rilindje (Renaissance). Migjeni was an acute critic of the system of his time, also known as the “Poet of the Poor”. He deals in his literary works with the sad reality of poverty that plagued Puka and the surrounding areas at the time.

Sarda Island

m

The island of Sarda is located in Vau Dejës Lake, about ten kilometers from the center of the Municipality. The peculiarity of this island is represented by the presence of the remains of the ancient city of Sarda, which towards the end of the 15th century was an important economic and cultural center of the northern region of present Albania. In addition to the fascinating medieval remains, the island is also a must-see for the beauty of the boat-ride necessary to reach it, among rocky shores dotted with the characteristic local Mediterranean scrub.

Qafë Bari Prison

m

The infamous Qafë Bari prison camp is located in the town of the same name on the territory of the Municipality of Fushë Arrëz. Like other maximum security internment facilities in the days of the communist regime, this camp was intended to confine political prisoners. In 1984 there was a famous uprising of prisoners. Now the site keeps alive the memory of the brutality and suffering imposed by the dictatorship.

Dalmace Fortress

m

The remains of the Dalmace Fortress are located in the valley of the Koman village, in the northeast of the Municipality of Vau Dejës. They can be reached via the road along the picturesque shores of Vau Dejës Lake. The site is interesting for the remains of the ancient settlement and especially for the cemetery area, dating back to the High Middle Ages, which represents an important case study for the entire Balkan region. An excursion to this place might be a great opportunity to learn more about the history of this region, a bridge between the hinterland and the Adriatic Sea.

Danja Fortress

m

Built on the hill overlooking the present village of Deja (Vau Dejës), Danja Fortress was one of the most important medieval fortifications (11 – 15th century) in what is now northern Albania. Among the legends surrounding this site, one of the best-known states that this was the place where the wedding of Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero, was celebrated. Nowadays, unfortunately, very little remains of the original structure, but a visit to the site allows you to better understand the strategic importance of the place where it was built, that is, to control the Drini valley and the plain of Zadrima, between Lezhë (Alessio) and Shkodër (Scutari).

Vig Fortress

m

The Vig Fortress is located in the village of the municipality of Vau Dejës, on a flat area of ca. 5600 m2 where the Gjadër River and the Vomë stream converge. Today it is less known than other fortifications in the area but in the past, it played a strategic role in the road arteries of medieval times and beyond. The remains of the square-shaped structure with 12 defensive towers are another evidence of the importance of this region as a crossroads of trade, people and cultures.
